Local police will increase sobriety checkpoints for Cinco de Mayo this weekend throughout the Los Angeles area. While Cinco de Mayo is a time of celebration for many, local law enforcement predicts an increased number of drunk drivers on the road as well. Police hope to discourage drunk drivers by saturating the LA area with sobriety checkpoints, where officers will check drivers for signs of intoxication. The NHTSA reports that DUI checkpoints are one of the most effective ways to prevent drunk driving. Additionally, DUI checkpoints are more cost effective than other methods of drunk driving prevention. The Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety said that “DUI Checkpoints have been an essential part of the phenomenal reduction in DUI deaths that we witnessed since 2006 in California. But since the tragedy of DUI accounts for nearly one third of traffic fatalities, Los Angeles needs the high visibility enforcement and public awareness that checkpoints provide.”
