Whether you are attending a holiday party at a friend’s house or hosting your work Christmas party, you need to be aware of the pitfalls that could lead to a DUI for you or your guests.

If you are hosting be sure to serve plenty of alcohol alternatives for designated drivers and to absorb any alcohol consumed. Make sure that there are appetizers or a full meal along with cocktails. It may sound silly but give out name tags with “drink responsibly” printed on them. The gentle reminder works. Have any servers or bartenders inform you if they feel that someone is too intoxicated to drive. If it is a company party, work with management to offer Taxi incentives to all employees. Host the party at or near a hotel and get a room block for your guests.

If you are attending holiday parties always designate a sober driver or take a cab. If the party does not include dinner, eat beforehand. Having food in your stomach will help absorb some of the alcohol consumed at any event. While we do not recommend relying on the portable alcohol screening devices that can be purchased over the internet, it will help to give you some indication of what your blood alcohol level may be. Remember that they should not be solely relied upon. The breathalyzers purchased over the internet may not be properly calibrated or maintained and thus may give an inaccurate reading. Do not rely on a portable breathalyzer to determine whether or not you should drive. You may still be over the limit.

The Law Offices of Thomas Wallin wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday. If you or someone you know has been arrested for driving under the influence, the first call you should make is to a qualified DUI defense attorney.
