Contra Costa Deputy Sheriff Sentenced To Prison In DUI Conspiracy

Stephen Tanabe, a former Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Deputy was convicted of conspiracy, wire fraud and extortion. The strange conspiracy began with former private investigator Christopher Butler who helped to arrange the DUI arrests of three men. The so-called “Dirty DUIs” occurred when Butler allegedly employed women to seduce husbands of Butler’s female divorce clients to become intoxicated. Butler would then notify Tanabe of the drunk drivers. During one of the arrests, Tanabe was off duty and watched with Butler as the man became intoxicated. He then notified another officer, resulting in the arrest. Tanabe was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months because of his involvement with the DUI sting.
